UPSC photo and triple signature size

The UPSC online application portal (upsconline.nic.in) has its own rules, different from bank and SSC forms. The signature, in particular, is three signatures in one image. Pick the document below and KBSnap sets the KB range. Nothing is uploaded.

The official specifications

From the UPSC instructions for uploading photo and signature, linked from the application portal. Check the current version before you apply.

DocumentFileSizeKey rules
PhotographJPG, named photo20–200 KBRecent colour photo; face covers at least 75% of the photo; plain white background; both ears visible
SignatureJPG, named signature20–100 KB, 350–500 pixelsSign three times, one below the other, black ink on plain white paper, scanned as one image

You also capture a live photograph inside the form, using your webcam or by scanning a QR code with your phone. That is taken in the portal, not prepared here.

The 75% face rule

UPSC's examples reject photos where the face is too small, not centred, looking away, blurred, or so close that the ear lobes are cut off. Crop so your face fills about three-quarters of the frame, centred, looking straight at the camera, with both ears and the edges of the face visible. A standard passport photo with lots of shoulder and background often fails this rule and needs a tighter crop.

Other photo don'ts

Making the triple signature

  1. On plain white paper with no lines, sign three times in black ink, one below the other, leaving a clear gap between each.
  2. Photograph or scan it in good light, upright, not rotated.
  3. Crop around all three signatures, so the image is taller than it is wide.
  4. Pick Triple signature 20–100 KB. "Whiten paper" cleans the background. Max width is set to 500 px to stay within the 350–500 pixel range; adjust it if your crop is very tall.
  5. Save the file as signature.jpg before uploading.

UPSC states that signature files that do not meet the specifications will be rejected.

FAQ

Can I reuse my IBPS or SSC photo?

Only if it meets UPSC's rules. UPSC wants the face to fill 75% of the photo on a plain white background, which is tighter than most bank forms. See the IBPS sizes for comparison.

My photo is already under 200 KB. Do I need to compress it?

Not if it is between 20 and 200 KB and meets the face rule. Check that it is not below 20 KB.

Is anything uploaded to KBSnap?

No. Compression happens in your browser on your device.
